Physiotherapy for Posture Improvement & Conditioning Edinburgh

A lot of common musculoskeletal problems, including pain and balance issues, are caused by poor posture habits. Physiotherapy treatments and training can relieve those for good.

Reduce pain. Improve flexibility. Get back your ability to move.

Good posture is important for your long-term health. It involves training your muscles to work in the right way whilst standing, walking, sitting etc. With good posture, there is less strain on your body’s joints and connective tissue.

Poor posture can occur as a result of your daily activities, e.g. staying in the same position for extended periods, repetitive motions, and also due to psychosocial factors like stress from work.
‍
Achieving good posture, whether dynamic or static, may require learning new movements and positions, and also changing long-held habits.

Some examples of postural problems that physiotherapy can treat include:

  • Flat back syndrome (fixed sagittal imbalance): the natural curve of the lower spine being lost, causing a flattened spine. Hip, back and hamstring muscles can be affected, causing difficulty standing for long periods.

  • Leg length discrepancy: Significant difference in bone lengths, which may be anatomical (congenital, developmental, post-trauma) or functional (due to e.g. muscle imbalances, or postural disturbance).

  • Lordosis: exaggerated inward curve of the spine, potentially causing tightness in some muscles and weakness in others.

  • Rounded shoulders: often caused by sedentary lifestyles, the resultant hunched posture can put pressure on the neck and upper back.

  • Scoliosis: sideways curve of the spine, which may be structural or functional. This may be improved by strengthening the back muscles in order to support the spine.

Our program always starts with a comprehensive posture and lifestyle analysis, so we know exactly what is wrong

Only after that, the best treatment, again fitted to your lifestyle as well as the nature of the problem, will be planned and used. These include:

  • Various forms of body work, for example myofascial release therapy, stretching, spinal mobilisation.

  • Targeted exercises: these are often aimed to strengthen weak muscles or stretch tight muscles which may be contributing to poor posture. Exercises may also be targeted to loosen stiff joints, or provide more stability where joints are too mobile.

  • Preventative or assistive taping.

  • Supportive bracing.

  • Balkefors Orthopaedics custom-made insoles.

  • Elements of Alexander Technique.

I have been working out in the gym and for a long time I had a problem with a painful elbow especially after a chest and triceps day. After one treatment of Shockwave I felt a big difference, like I had a new elbow. Thank you, Sebastian.
